A Groom with a View "Where have you been?" Shelley demanded. "You're as pale as a ghost! And what are you doing with that cat?" Jane sat down on her bed in the former monk's cell and said, "I've had quite an adventure." She told Shelley how the main door to the lodge attacked her, her lamp had been blown out, the cat had scared her half to death and someone who would not answer had blinded her in the dark with a flashlight. "Your imagination has gone into overdrive," Shelley said. "But it's true. And I'm not finished yet. Out there in the hallway someone ran into me and I didn't imagine that because the cat hissed at the intruder." "Okay," Shelley said briskly. "We'll get to the bottom of this right now. I have flashlights." Pajama'd and robed, and equipped with Shelley's strong flashlights they crept to main room. It looked like it had before the power went out to Jane. But Shelley was more observant. She directed her flashlight at the long wall across the room. "Something's missing." Jane stared. "Weren't there a row of hunting prints hung there?" "Yes. They were trite and worthless. Why would anybody steal them?" "I don't know, but it explains why somebody was in here and wouldn't answer me." "Maybe," Shelley whispered, sounding a bit shaken now. "Let's go back to our rooms. This is going to seem very silly in the morning." "I hope so. But this whole night has been spooky to the max. Somebody's up to no good." "Jane, just concentrate on the wedding and quit worrying. Everything is going to work out fine." "No power, no bridesmaids' dresses, a flock of squabbling old ladies, a cat burglar, and everything's going to be fine? Like hell." |
